Guidelines with Ryan McMahon; Minnesota
Over the last couple weeks we’ve had very steady weather that has yielded some very steady fishing. We’ve had a slow steady drop in water temps due mostly to cool nights. I’ve been bouncing weeks back and forth between Twin Cities Metro waters and the Detroit Lakes area.
Fish have been biting bucktails and top-waters in both areas. In the metro area we’ve been able to capitalize on most chances as we are not seeing many fish unless they are committing to the bait. In the Detroit Lakes area we’ve been getting many more follows per bite but getting fish in the same manner as the city lakes. Fish are relatively shallow in 4-12’ of water. They are eating prop baits like the Lake X Lures Fat Bastard and Cannon Ball Jr but we’ve also had luck on more subtle top-waters like Creepers and Flaptails. The bucktail bite has been dominated by the Musky Frenzy IC9’s for the most part in my boat. They’ve been working well in the same 4-12’ range.

Bite windows have been short on the warm sunny days it’s been tough with little to no follows to know where to be during moon windows. Using side imaging to locate inactive fish has been a big part of being in the right spot at the right time. Don’t be discouraged if you’re not moving many fish. Keep plugging away!
