Guidelines with Andrew Schiera: Northern IL

There’s no time like early fall if you’re a Musky angler. The days are getting shorter which means a transitional time for us here in Northern IL.

Last weeks rain and a few nights in the low 50s has dropped our surface temperatures to 68*.  This has caused most of our Yellow Bass and Gizzard Shad populations to ball up on primary break lines in 4-8′ of water. The water clarity or visibility has been ranging from 3-4′.

That being said,  the topwater or bucktail program has been producing for my boat.  Size 9 Colorado’s like Chaos Tackles 9 shorts and Lake X’s Fat Bastards are getting chewed.

Low light has been a factor for finding these shallower fish “Active”, typically in conjunction with a solar or lunar window.  The Fox Waterway has kept our pool height consistent! This has allowed for a lot of fish to belly down in the weeds!!

The bite is on and the muskies are filling out form their summer builds.  With a few warmer weeks left… get out and get after em!!
