Guide Lines with Glenn McDonald: Northwestern Ontario

Fishing report for June 21, 2021

Musky opener was this past Saturday in Northwestern Ontario. With the continued border closure, now in effect until at least July 21, the lakes were quiet for the most part.

My buddy Dave Chaval and I were fishing the Cedar/Perrault lake system and we headed up the Ord river in search of some fish that may be hanging in the river following the spawn. Things went sideways for us when the river got too shallow and we sucked mud up the water intake. The impeller became plugged with mud and would not pump water. Being out of cell service and three or four miles from the main lake the only option was to try to take it apart and clean it ourselves.

Having a tool box on board was key and knowing how to take things apart certainly helped. For two hours we stood in knee deep swamp water taking things apart and getting it cleaned out. We managed to fix the issue and fish the rest of the day.

We put a few fish in the boat, nothing of any size but it was worthy of note that our best bite was trolling the edges of the deep basins.

Water temps on Perrault were 64-66 degrees throughout the system. We did not move many fish in shallow weeds. Most of the fish that were shallow were related to rock structure. These fish followed bucktails, while the fish sitting off the structure were chasing Lake X toads, Bondy Royal Orba or the new Soul Searcher twitch bait from Bangarang Custom Baits.

Trolling baits that got hit include the Jake and BR Baits custom wonder bread pattern.

Out on Eagle Lake one of the guides out of Andy Meyer’s Lodge, Treven Ouellet put a couple in the boat on opener as well. While fishing solo, as he often does, he slid the net under a 44.5 and 43.5. Not a bad way to start the season.

Sunday brought a cold front over there region and I have not heard of many fish being caught, but I did hear a report of a monster being caught over the weekend. Details to follow.

With the full moon coming later this week and temps stabilizing we should see some solid fishing heading into next weekend.

I’ll be out on Eagle Lake next weekend, and I hope to have a great report for next week.
