Guide Lines with Capt. Ken Trail: New River Virginia
MH Fishing Report
Great first week back to musky fishing! We had several fish hit
the bag on a couple different techniques. But slow rolling
blades was the most effective.
Justin Morris, Wade Custom Lures, was out with me and caught
his PB on a big, old spawned out female. Sweetest part of that
fish for him was it was also on his blades!
Water temperatures are climbing with the warmer air
temperatures and cloudless days. River levels are starting to get
a little low and clear, but storms are in the forecast this week.
Water temps on the James and New are upper 50’s, climbing to
low 60’s by the afternoon. There are still females in spawn
recovery areas but they are also starting to move. I’ve seen
some fish already showing up in their summer time locations.
This is an excellent time to work those transition areas and
small eddie pockets throughout the river as the fish are moving
from spawn locations to their summer haunts! Also begin to
focus on those places the grass is starting to show up in, the
fish will begin to start showing up at these places very soon!
