Guide Lines from Andrew Schiera: Shimano Tekota Trolling Reels

The Best Trolling Reels with Line Counters

If you asked any full-time Musky guide what his favorite, most
dependable trolling reel was, he would undoubtedly say the Shimano
Tekota*. With the loudest “Tickers”, smooth as butter drag (over 24lbs)
and most consistent synchronized level wind systems on the market, I
cannot even think of a near equal alternative. The older model year
Tekota’s can still be found on sites like Ebay or FB Marketplace for
under $200. In my opinion these older model Tekota’s are absolutely
bullet-proof. Mine have done battle over 5 long Illinois seasons of rain,
sleet, and snow without a rebuild!

However, the new Shimano Tekota A 300-400 LC Trolling Reels offer
high speed alternatives to these older designed reels. The new 6:3:1 high
speed retrieves a staggering 38” per turn of the handle. I have used these
newer models on a few occasions and was pleasantly surprised with its light
weight and Shimano* smooth performance. The new style is also a bit easier
on the hands with the overall size reduced by almost 30% and down to 17oz.
